Clients who are not ready to quit but are thinking about embracing a tobacco-free lifestyle are sent motivational materials and a list of cessation programs in their area. They are encouraged to call back when they are ready for counseling.
Some clients are ready to quit but would prefer to do it without the aid of an Arizona Smokers’ Helpline counselor. These clients are sent the self-help Arizona Smokers’ Helpline Guide to Tobacco-Free Life and a list of cessation programs in their area. These clients are also encouraged to call back with further questions or to receive counseling services.
The Arizona Smokers’ Helpline considers a client ready to quit if they are willing to set a quit date within the next two weeks and have a high probability of abstinence for at least 24 hours. For these clients, a quit date is set and they are mailed an Arizona Smokers’ Helpline Guide to Tobacco-Free Life to help them prepare for their quit date. Clients are then encouraged to identify their own idiosyncratic tobacco use habits and to develop plans to cope with tobacco use urges before being contacted by a counselor.
Clients are contacted the day before they quit, the day after they quit, one week after they quit, and at various time intervals up to a total of 8 weeks of counseling.
Pregnant clients are followed under a special pregnancy protocol. For more information, see Pregnancy and Smoking.
