The US Public Health Service released an update to the Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence in June, 2008. Since 1996, the USPHS has worked in cooperation with many national and state agencies to produce comprehensive recommendations for treating tobacco use dependence in health care settings. The guidelines provide models for treating tobacco dependence in clinical settings as well as larger healthcare systems (managed care plans, hospitals, etc).

At the ASHLine, we use a client-directed approach to quit tobacco coaching. Our coaches are trained in US PHS recommended practical counseling skills. ASHLine coaches work on 1) enhancing factors that will bring successful outcomes; 2) using the client’s ideas and preferences to guide their choice of techniques or models of treatment; and 3) informing their work with the client’s feedback about the progress being made.
